OTHER INFORMATION
The Pantanal and Guianas
The
Pantanal is the largest flood plain in the world, with an area of
230.000 Km2. mainly in Brazil, but part in Bolivia and Paraguay.
It is one of the natural wonders of South America. UNESCO
has declared it an Ecological Sanctuary and Natural World Heritage
Site. The plains are the home of more than 130 species of
reptiles and mammals, and more than 650 species of birds.
The rains play a very important role in the cycle of life.
During the rainy season, from October to April, the Paraguay River
and its tributaries grow, flooding the surrounding plains. This
brings sediments and nutrients into the ecosystem, helping to feed
thousands of fish and birds. Later in the dry season, from May to
September, wildlife is abundant in the swamp ecosystem.
The dry season is the best time of the year to visit as it becomes
more accessible and wildlife easier to observe. Guianas and the
Venezuelan Plains.
The tropical rainforest of South America is fast disappearing in
many areas. One of the few areas that still remain pristine
and have abundant wildlife, are the rain forests of the three Guianas.
Native tribes inhabit this area and use the resources in order to
survive, but as a part of the ecosystem they live in harmony with
their environment. Our trip to the Guianas offers the
opportunity to see virgin rainforest and its wildlife as well as
the experience of sharing this unique destination with native cultures.
Furthermore the trip also takes us through part of Venezuela.
The
Venezuelan Plains and the Tepuis are considered one of the wonders
of the world. The Tepuis (huge mushroom like rock formations
with a flat top plateau) are like isolated islands within the forest.
As we cross these plains, we go to the top of the Roraima Tepui
by helicopter and visit Angel Falls (979 m.), the world's longest
freefalling waterfall. The contrasts between the humid plains
of Venezuela, the lush tropical rainforest of the Guianas and the
isolation of the Tepuis makes it a unique destination for the adventurous.
It is a naturalist 's paradise, where a sense of discovery and exploration
still exist.
Senderos Naturales invites you to visit these natural wonders with
us. Our trips are accompanied by a naturalist guide / trip
leader and a local guide. We use four-wheel drive for land
transportation, but also travel by foot, canoe and small planes.
Normally we organize group departures but can accommodate requests
from individual travelers. We offer three different
types of trips.
